Hi fellow Excel Addict,

Too funny! Last week I posted this picture, stating that it is a 'non-Excel' project that I am currently working on. But one of my readers, Jeff, noticed that my ceiling under construction actually looks like a spreadsheet with empty cells. Funny I didn't notice that!

I hope you are having a great week and are making time to improve your Excel skills, that will free up more time to improve your Excel skills, that will free up more time to improve your Excel skills, that will free up more time to improve your Excel skills...
Are you beginning to see how this works?

If you like this week's tip, please share it and recommend your colleagues and any other Excel users you know to sign up for my newsletter.

THIS WEEK'S 'EXCEL IN SECONDS' TIP

How to Save an Uncooperative Formula

I just recently opened an old email from 2015 that included an Excel tip that Julie H recommended for my newsletter. I checked back and don't think that I ever published it in my newsletter. Sorry Julie. Better late than never.

This is a tip I use frequently but, as often is the case, it's so second nature to me that I had never thought of sharing it as a tip in my newsletter.

How many times does it happen to you that you are in the process of creating a formula and, when you press Enter, you get a message saying there is an error in your formula? The problem is that, unless Excel is smart enough to suggest a correction, you cannot save the invalid formula and continue to tweak it until it is correct.

If you've gone to some effort to create such a formula, at this point you really don't want to hit the Escape key or click the X on the Formula Bar and lose your work.

Thankfully, there is a simple solution.

Just insert an apostrophe at the beginning of the formula and press Enter. Excel will save the uncooperative formula that you have created so far as a text string.

You can then remove the apostrophe and troubleshoot the error. If you get the error message again, you can press Escape and the text version of the formula, including the apostrophe, will remain.

Formula Troubleshooting

A trick to help you troubleshoot your formulas is to highlight parts of the formula and press the F9 key to see if it evaluates to some result or if it is the source of your error.
